What is VelesChat?
VelesChat is an Android messenger with chat, voice calls, and video calls. It connects devices directly (peer-to-peer) on your local network or through Tor.
Do I need an account?
No. You do not register with us or provide a phone number. You add contacts manually — for example by scanning a QR code or entering a .onion address.
Are messages encrypted?
Yes. Text messages are end-to-end encrypted between your device and your contact's device. VelesChat has no server where they could be read in plain text.
How do Tor connections work?
In settings, enable connections over Tor and configure a SOCKS5 proxy (Orbot by default: 127.0.0.1:9050). When a contact has a .onion address, the app establishes a TCP connection through Tor. Chat and voice/video calls can use this path.
Can I talk only on home Wi‑Fi?
Yes. On the same local network, devices can discover and connect without Tor. That is the fastest path for voice and video.
Why can video over Tor have latency?
Tor improves privacy but adds network delay. VelesChat streams MJPEG + Opus over TCP and adapts quality to link conditions. On LAN, picture and sound are usually smoother.
Is there group chat?
Yes. VelesChat supports encrypted group chats with text, photos, and video. You can also use 1:1 conversations and voice/video calls.
Where is my data stored?
On your phone: contacts, chat history, and encryption keys. Uninstalling the app or clearing its data removes that information from the device (unless you have your own system backup).
Does VelesChat collect data on a server?
We do not run a central message server. The veleschat.com website provides product information and the privacy policy — see the privacy policy for details.
How do I download the app?
Download the latest APK from the home page (direct link). Inside the app, open Settings → About VelesChat to open the website or download an update. Google Play listing is still in preparation.
